In a few weeks it is time for a season change in the shoe cupboard and the wardrobe. After the winter you pack away your warm shoes and the summer or transition shoes take over. How do the winter shoes stay nice until the next use?

Regular care is a must. Consistent care maintains the value of the shoes. Particularly if you want to “put the winter shoes in mothballs”, it is important to clean boots & co. thoroughly and maintain them intensively. And with the prospect of the approaching summer, spring cleaning in the shoe cupboard is just as much more fun!

1. cleaning

Before you can care for your shoes, you have to clean them. Remove rough dirt with a brush, damp cloth or sponge. Pay attention to the type of leather. Sensitive smooth leather is best cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge. Rough leather can also be cleaned with a horsehair or natural crepe brush. Depending on the material, use leather soap or cleaning foam specially developed for shoe care. Please do not use household cleaners, they could damage the material. Do not forget to clean the flap, heel and sole!

Tip: Remove the traces of winter immediately. You walked through the snow for a long time? Or strolled through the Christmas market in a drizzle? The cold time of the year gives the material of the shoes a hard time. Shoes get wet, get stains. When they dry out, salt and snow lines can form. It is best to remove these traces of winter immediately. To do so, use the cleaning foam mentioned above – the pedag Combi Cleaner.

2. drying

Before you can start with the care, let the shoes dry. The best and most gentle way to dry them is at room temperature. A shoe shaper or upper former will keep them in shape during this process. Please do not put wet shoes on directly, but allow them to dry. Carefully stuff them with kitchen towels or newspaper to absorb the moisture. Only then apply the shoe tree. Please do not place shoes on or in front of the heating. Quick drying makes the leather brittle!

3. care

Use care products suitable for the leather or material of the shoes. If you want to refresh the colour, apply shoe polish in the appropriate shade (or lighter). Greased greasy leathers are happy with a portion of leather grease. You can find more detailed information about the care of the leather types here! The best way to care for your shoes is to place them on a shoe shaper. This way the care penetrates into the depths of the creases. After drying, polish out the care product, in the case of suede, straighten the fibres with a brush and finally impregnate them for protection.

4. storage

To make sure your shoes survive the summer in the closet, think about how you want to store them. The basement, the attic or the closet? In boxes or just a big box? If you follow our tips, your winter boots and winter shoes will survive the rest of the summer without damage. And they are quickly ready for use in winter.

  • Store your boots in an airy and dry place. In this way you avoid the development of smell or mould.
  • Shoes want to breathe, so do not use plastic bags for storage, but permeable fabric bags or the shoebox.
  • Shoes like it tidy. If you stack them on top of each other in a box, the upper material could bend and be damaged in the long run.
  • Shoes like it dry. If your basement has a high humidity, it is not the right place for your shoes.
  • If your shoes are stored for a long time, they like it dark. Sunlight could cause the material to fade and become brittle.
  • It is best to store shoes and boots listed on a shoe or bootleg former. Both smooth out creases and ensure that shoes and boots keep their shape on the shoe shelf!

In our blog post “Order in the shoe cupboard” you will find suggestions on how to get an overview of your “shoe stocks”.
